Nearly 30 years ago, I spent a long weekend in San Francisco and have been fortunate to do it again many times since, for a variety of reasons – to visit friends, attend conferences, and to layover on my way into/out of the country (which I highly recommend). And one of the best parts about my most recent trip to San Francisco is that Virgin America now has $59/one-way non-stop flights from San Diego. And VA just happens to be in the new terminal at SFO airport. If you’ve not been to Terminal 2 at the airport, you may be surprised to find really good food, including both Cat Cora and Bobby Flay restaurants, wine tasting, and a Yoga room! Yes, you heard me, there’s a room just for you Yoga nuts, complete with mats! When I was there, I couldn’t help recall the story of the man who lived at Charles de Gaulle Airport for 17 years! You remember him – The Terminal Man. I personally would be quite comfortable living at T2. (Kidding. Sort of.)
If you’re able to venture out of the airport, you will find way too many things to do. If you’re fortunate to know someone local, that is absolutely the best way to see San Francisco for the first time. (True about anyplace, in my opinion.)
It’s easy to find lists of things to do and great places to eat in San Francisco. When researching for your visit, just type in “Top 10 Things To Do in San Francisco” or something like that, and you’ll be presented with lots of options. Add “Off the Beaten Path” to your search and you may be surprised what you will find.
It’s very tempting for me to start making recommendations here but I don’t want to overwhelm you. I would like to mention two hikes that I enjoyed very much. If you’re into hiking, you will surely enjoy a walk along Land’s End or, my favorite, Tennessee Valley in Marin County.
If all of this becomes a bit daunting, just visit Terminal 2 and head to the Yoga room and meditate on it. ~: )
