Waking Up App

When the Waking Up App was recommended to me it was a while before I actually took a look at it. Boy do I wish I had done so sooner! I can’t say enough good things about this app. Not only does it have what I call “real meditation” on a daily basis but there are other bonus features in this app that I absolulely love.

Sam Harris, an American author, philosopher, neuroscientist, and podcast host created this unique app. What makes it unique, well let me just quote directly from wakingup.com:

“There are hundreds of meditation apps on the market, and several do a fine job of teaching the basic principles of mindfulness. But most present the practice as though it were an ancient version of an executive stress ball – whereas it’s more like the Hubble Space Telescope.

The purpose of meditation isn’t merely to reduce stress or to make you feel better in the moment – it’s to make fundamental discoveries in the laboratory of your own mind.”

I could not agree more with the above assessment.

So as I mentioned, there are other elements to this app that I just love such as the Contemplative Action feature with David Whyte and the conversation between Whyte and Harris. I’ve fallen in love with David Whyte’s poetry and voice through this app. And also became aware that he was/is a very good friend of another favorite of mine, John O’Donohue, the author of my all-time favorite book, Beauty. Which is one of the very first 5 Heart Ratings I did. And if you ever get to hear this masterpiece in John’s own voice on audio, you’ll know what I mean when I say “masterpiece”. Sadly John left us way too soon several years ago at the age of 52. He passed in his sleep in a village in the South of France just kilometers from where I have visited many times! Whenever I hear David Whyte mention John’s name I feel a blanket of warmth come over me. I can certainly see why these two are friends.

You can try Waking Up for yourself for free for a month. And they also have an ongoing policy that if you cannot afford to pay at this time just shoot them an email and they’ll let you have it for free. I wish the whole world would take advantage of this opportunity. I am certain if more people meditated, the human race would be far better off. As a matter of fact, if I ever go on another date, it will be with someone who meditates. That’s how much value I give to this daily practice.
