If you’re in the mood for a great true-story movie the whole family can enjoy, I highly recommend you watch Penguin Bloom on Netflix! The movie, starring Naomi Watts, Andrew Lincoln and Jacki Weaver, is based on a best-selling book by Cameron Bloom and Bradley Trevor Greive.
Samantha Bloom (real-life wife of the author of the book) has a life-changing accident and is paralysed from the chest down. A year later, she cautiously approaches an injured bird her children have adopted and named Penguin and things begin to change for both of them.
This is the story of a woman and a bird. But of course, there’s so much more to the story…
My own mother rescued 3 sparrows over the course of several years that had fallen from a nest in a tree on our property. She nursed them back to health, trained them, and named them Mr. Peepers #1, #2, and #3. I think back often on those memories of my mom, mother of 9, usually pregnant, tenderly bonding with these vulnerable creatures as they were her own babies. She just knew what to do. No Google. No books. Just instinct. It was remarkable to witness.
So this story is especially heart-warming for me but I am certain you and your family too will enjoy this real-life tale of hope, healing, fear, and freedom. Must mostly love.
