If I had a bumper sticker on my car, it would read: “I brake for bakeries!” Yes, I know this is in contradiction with recent trends to avoid certain foods, but having been a professional baker myself and knowing firsthand the painstaking effort that goes into the creation of a 144-layer all-butter croissant, I will always have a place in my heart for fresh baked goods. Memory of the smell of home-baked cookies in my Polish grandmother’s kitchen are forever emblazoned in my soul.

So it should be no surprise to find a wonderful french bakery, La Boulangerie, receiving a 5 Heart Rating. This small bakery is in South France, in the tiniest little village where there is only the bakery, a post office, a pub, an inn with a restaurant you will find featured in this blog as well, and one small convenience store. On my second visit to this area, I frequented the bakery twice a day. The tarte au citron pictured here is the best I have had. The cookies, tartes, and artisan breads are all out of this world and the baker/owner is so kind, as is his sweet wife.

It is not easy to find information about this bakery. No phone number. No website or email. So if you plan a trip to the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, let me know and I’ll tell you how to find this well-hidden gem.
