Did you know that just once a year you can ride your bike across the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge? When I heard about this ride, I just had to do it, since even driving a car across the bridge has always given me the willies. Boy was I surprised! Not only was I not scared even one tiny little bit, but the 25 mile ride was easy and the folks I met at the beer garden after the ride were a hoot! (Not sure if the fact that I was one of the first to arrive at the beer garden was due to my riding ability and speed or the fact that others just held out until a much more reasonable time to start drinking beer!!) I started drinking at 9:30 and the New Belgium beer was so good! (Last time beer tasted that good to this wine drinker was actually at a bowling alley in Belgium!) And of course the highlight of the ride is the beautiful bayside scenery passing San Diego, Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista and National City, finishing at Embarcadero Mariana Park South. This event was so well-organized with the best race start of any kind I have seen. The whole event was virtually seamless.
Bike The Bay is a fun ride for people of all levels of riding ability, and features individuals, families, corporate teams, and the sorta serious and not-so-serious cyclist who want to experience a scenic bayside ride and also enjoy their only opportunity of the year to ride over the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge.
This year’s event will take place on Sunday, August 23, 2015 with registration beginning March 1st. For more information, please visit the website at www.bikethebay.net
